Joan Didion: Swag, Style, and/or Substance
seriously satisfying critique of joan didion
"Didion’s deeply-rooted biases regarding gender and male superiority (both artistic and otherwise) are displayed curtly but tellingly within these two answers. Given the culture and class she was born into, this is unsurprising, but it becomes increasingly problematic and jarring when contrasted with the swath of articles following her death that attempted to rewrite Joan’s legacy and make her into a feminist icon who fought for women in literary spaces. Joan cared about procuring literary opportunities for one woman only: herself.
Because of the dichotomy Didion’s interview answers invoke between the stereotypes of logical man versus emotional woman and her obvious preference for the former, my eye twitches at every article, every post that applauds the immense emotional control and “clarity” in her writing. It’s a strange thing to commend her for, especially if a woman is doing the commending, because Didion herself thought her writing so superior to other women’s that she refused to compare their work to her own, only engaging in comparisons to male writers and gushing about the “perfection” of their craft. The unemotional coldness in her writing is effectively her own emulation of maleness, and is no accident: it’s entirely the point."
